This lesson pack employs a poem entitled ‘Madrigal apasionado’ by the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. First, students read the original Spanish version of the poem and complete four tasks. They then read a short informative passage about some of the things to consider when translating a piece of creative writing and complete another four tasks, including listening to a musical rendition of the poem with Spanish guitar. This PowerPoint presentation contains two versions of 15 pictures. One version is marked with a red square and is more suitable for higher level year 9 and GCSE students. Group Talk encourages students to use the language in more casual, conversational settings. Put up a PowerPoint with pictures of various branded snacks, video games, television shows, movies, etc and get the students to use their knowledge of the language along with these crib sheets to engage in debates; expressing their opinions, agreeing and disagreeing with one another. There are three KS 3 sheets. Level 1 for Year 7, Level 2 for Year 8, Level 3 for Year 9, or can be used most specifically for differentiation within year groups. There is also a higher level, more mature sheet aimed at GCSE students. Get your students speaking more spontaneously and try not to correct small mistakes! Although I have listed these resources under 'displays and posters', I have found it helpful to have a set of each laminated ready to give out to the class when needed. An excellent starter or plenary activity and great training for the new GCSE speaking elements.
